Feb 21 (Reuters) - The following bids, mergers, acquisitions and disposals involving European, U.S. and Asian companies were reported by 2100 GMT on Thursday.

** Anglo-Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier (REL.L) announced the acquisition of U.S. risk-management business ChoicePoint Inc (CPS.N) for $4.1 billion, including debt, and said it would intensify a cost-saving drive and sell an advertising-dependent information business.

** Bain Capital Partners and China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd [HWT.UL] have withdrawn their application for U.S. security approval of a $2.2 billion purchase of 3Com Corp COMS.O after failing to satisfy the concerns of a U.S. government panel. [nPEK25802]

** Barrick Gold Corp (ABX.TO) will pay $1.7 billion to buy out Rio Tinto’s (RIO.L) 40 percent stake in their Cortez joint venture in Nevada, acquiring ownership of the potential million-ounce-a-year gold-mining project, Barrick said. [nN21448037]

** Egypt’s Orascom Construction Industries OCIC.CA OCICq.L said it was taking on the fertiliser activities of UAE company Abraaj Capital in exchange for cash and shares worth about $1.59 billion. [nL21789600]

** Meadowbrook Insurance Group Inc MIG.N said it agreed to buy ProCentury Corp PROS.O for about $272.6 million in cash and stock to expand in property and casualty insurance. [nWEN4028]

** Australian zinc miners Perilya Ltd PEM.AX and CBH Resources Ltd CBH.AX said they had had discussions about a potential merger, but cautioned no agreement was imminent. [nSYD168977]

** Primary Health Care Ltd PRY.AX extended its A$2.7 billion ($2.5 billion) bid for medical testing and pharmacy group Symbion Health Ltd SYB.AX to March 11, as it closed in on a full takeover. [nSYD101755]

** U.S. oil major Exxon Mobil (XOM.N) said it is seeking bids for part of its stake in deep water blocks off the Irish coast, hitting project partner Providence Resources’s PRR.I shares. [nL21388287]

** Solar cell maker Webel-SL Energy Systems Ltd (WESL.BO) said its board had decided to cancel its earlier decision to acquire the remaining 75 percent stake in a joint venture in Singapore. [nBMB001030]

** U.S. chip maker Micron Technology MU.N and Taiwan’s Nanya Technology (2408.TW) have signed a licensing agreement and are discussing a chip joint venture, sources from both firms said, in a bid to lower production costs. [nTP20269]

** Polyus Gold PLGL.MM, Russia’s largest gold miner, plans to spin off its exploration business in a private placement, possibly in London, in March-April, the firm’s president said. [nL21352081]

** Indian fertiliser cooperative IFFCO will take an 85 percent stake in Senegal’s loss-making phosphate producer ICS after pumping in $100 million of capital, Senegal’s Mining Minister Madicke Niang said. [nL21786461]
