Oct 21 (Reuters) - Waters Corp (WAT.N), which makes drug research tools, posted a 34 percent rise in quarterly profit, helped by in part by gains from foreign exchange.
The company reported third-quarter net income of $71.5 million, or 71 cents a share, compared with $53.3 million, or 52 cents a share, a year ago.
Excluding items, it earned 79 cents a share.
Revenue rose 10 percent to $386.3 million for the period, while foreign currency translation contributed 3 percent to the reported sales growth rate.
Analysts were expecting 74 cents a share, before items, on revenue of $390.3 million, according to Reuters Estimates.
The company, a bellwether of the research tools industry, forecast fourth-quarter earnings of $1.08 to $1.12 a share on revenue growth of about 4 percent.
Analysts were expecting earnings of $1.11 a share on revenue of $469.7 million for the period.
Shares of the Milford, Massachusetts-based company were trading down about 17 cents at $48.69 in morning trade on the New York Stock Exchange. (Reporting by Aradhana Aravindan in Bangalore; Editing by Anil D'Silva)
