Jan 11 (Reuters) - The following bids, mergers, acquisitions and disposals involving European, U.S. and Asian companies were reported by 2100 GMT on Friday.

** Bank of America Corp (BAC.N) said it agreed to acquire battered Countrywide Financial Corp CFC.N in a $4 billion transaction that could help avert one of the biggest collapses from the U.S. housing crisis.

** Rock-Tenn Co RKT.N said it agreed to buy privately held containerboard and corrugated packaging company Southern Container Corp for $851 million in cash. [nWEN3341]

** Polish oil firm Petrolinvest PROL.WA signed preliminary deals worth $512 million to expand its presence in the potentially lucrative Kazakhstan oil industry, it said. [nL11785594]

** Standard Chartered (STAN.L) signed an agreement to buy a mutual savings bank from South Korea’s government restructuring agency for a reported 150 billion won ($160.3 million). [nSEO323965]

** Hungarian power wholesaler MVM has won the tender to buy a 10.5 percent stake in electricity distributor ELMU for 19.20 billion forints ($110.9 million), beating a bid from RWE (RWEG.DE), ELMU’s majority owner. [nL11691922]

** Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc (BRKa.N) (BRKb.N) further increased its stake in Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corp BNI.N this week to about 17.6 percent.

According to a regulatory filing, Berkshire bought 751,400 shares in the U.S. railroad company for a total of about $58.1 million in the open market between Jan. 7 and Jan. 10. [nBNG316972]

** Crown Castle International Corp (CCI.N) shareholder Atticus Capital LP disclosed a 5.51 percent stake in the wireless tower operator. Atticus Capital said the stake gives it sole voting power and ownership of 15.7 million shares. [nWNAS6281]

** Japanese heavy machinery maker IHI Corp (7013.T) said it and steelmaker JFE Holdings Inc (5411.T) are in talks to merge their shipbuilding operations to create the world’s sixth-largest shipbuilder. [nT313735]

** Insurance holding company AmCOMP Inc AMCP.O said it agreed to be acquired by Employers Holdings Inc (EIG.N) for $194 million in cash. [nBNG202692]

** Wienerberger (WBSV.VI), the world’s largest brickmaker, said it had bought a 74 percent stake in British roof tile producer Sandtoft. [nL11423225]

** Norwegian conglomerate Orkla (ORK.OL) has raised its stake in Scandinavian Property Development SPRDE.OL to 6.09 percent from around 4.7 percent, Orkla said. [nL11774851]

** AIM-listed gold and coal miner Cambrian Mining HGV.L said it had received an unsolicited offer to buy 3 million shares at 70p each from unlisted private investment company Merim Pty Ltd. [nWLB5622]

** Irish telecoms billionaire Denis O’Brien and Independent News & Media (INME.I) Chief Executive Anthony O’Reilly said they had raised their stakes in the Dublin-based newspaper group in the latest in a series of tit-for-tat share grabs by the two long-term business rivals. [nL11802349]

** Russian tycoon Alexei Mordashov has raised his voting stake in German tourism and shipping group TUI AG (TUIGn.DE) to 5.02 percent, the company said. It had last reported his stake at 3.02 percent in November. [nL11430099]
