UPDATE 2-Deals of the day -- mergers and acquisitions

Jan 16 (Reuters) - The following bids, mergers, acquisitions and disposals involving European, U.S. and Asian companies were reported by 2100 GMT on Wednesday.

** Sun Microsystems Inc JAVA.O said it would buy Swedish open-source developer MySQL AB for about $1 billion to expand into the $15 billion database market, and that preliminary quarterly results showed no impact from the slowing U.S. economy. To read more, please double click on [nN16282330]

** British aerospace company Cobham Plc (COB.L) said it was to buy unlisted U.S. company Sparta Inc for $416 million in cash to expand into U.S. intelligence and missile defence markets. [nWLB5771]

** Oracle Corp ORCL.O, the world’s third-largest software maker, won a three-month-long campaign to buy BEA Systems Inc BEAS.O by raising its bid for the company by 14 percent to $8.5 billion. [nN16606737]

** Range Resources Corp (RRC.N) said it completed the acquisition of properties in the gas-rich Barnett Shale in Texas from a unit of DTE Energy Co (DTE.N) and a private company for an adjusted purchase price of $284 million. [nBNG120739]

** Cox Radio Inc CXR.N, which owns and operates 80 radio stations, said it exercised its option to buy five radio stations in Athens, Georgia for $60 million, less amounts previously paid toward the option totaling $12 million. [nWNAS6637]

** Kavveri Telecom Products Ltd (KATL.BO) said its subsidiary in Canada has acquired two firms in the United States and Canada. [nBMB000470]

** British fashion and furnishings retailer Laura Ashley (ALY.L) again raised its stake in potential takeover target Moss Bros (MOSB.L), the men’s fashion retailer, to 5.05 percent, it said. [nL16381890]

** Russian retailer X5 (PJPq.L) said it planned to execute its right to purchase 100 percent of shares in Formata, owner of the Karusel hypermarket chain, and had sent an option notice to shareholders. [nL16428665]

** Dhanus Technologies Ltd DHAT.BO said it has signed an agreement with Borusan Holding A.S. to buy out Turkey’s Borusan Telekom. [nBMB000491]

** European midmarket buyout firm Capvest said it agreed to buy Dutch-based coffee-roaster Drie Mollen from rivals Gilde Buy Out Partners and AAC Capital Partners for an undisclosed sum. [nL16318500]

** Swiss dental implant maker Sraumann (STMN.S) said it had bought Ormedent, which exclusively distributes its products in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia. No financial details were disclosed. [nZAT007331]

** India’s Tata Steel (TISC.BO) has signed a joint-venture agreement with Oman’s Al Bahja Group to develop limestone deposits in Salalah in the sultanate, the Indian firm said in a statement. The project would be executed by Al Rimal Mining LLC, in which Tata Steel would hold 70 percent, the statement said. [nBOM115469]

** Casual bakery/cafe chain Au Bon Pain said on Wednesday private equity firm LNK Partners would acquire a majority stake in the company, providing funds the chain will use for expansion. [nN16387063]

** SeaBright Insurance Holdings Inc’s SEAB.O shareholder Wells Fargo & Co (WFC.N) has liquidated its passive stake in the company, a regulatory filing showed. [nWNAS6608]
