Feb 25 (Reuters) - Low-cost wireless carrier MetroPCS Communications Inc PCS.N reported a quarterly profit that topped market estimates as subscriber additions rose from the previous quarter with an improving economy.
Quarterly consolidated net subscriber additions rose to 317,000, from 66,000 in the third quarter. Average revenue per user rose to $40.70. But churn rate, a measure of customer attrition, rose to 5.3 percent.
Fourth-quarter net income rose to $33.1 million, or 9 cents a share, from $14.6 million, or 4 cents a share, a year earlier. Revenue rose 29 percent to $939 million.
Analysts expected earnings of 6 cents a share, excluding exceptional items, on revenue of $895.2 million, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.
Quarterly consolidated adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization was $251 million, up 29 percent. Analysts expected EBITDA of $219.8 million.
MetroPCS shares closed at $6.24 Wednesday on the New York Stock Exchange. They are down 49 percent in the last 52 weeks. This compares with a 45 percent rise in the broader S&P Index .SPX over the same period. (Reporting by S. John Tilak in Bangalore; Editing by Aradhana Aravindan)
